Four Steps to the Perfect Smoky Eye

Whether you prefer keeping it natural or going for the glam, a smoky eye is one of the most universally flattering, versatile and easy-to-achieve looks for that never goes out of style. From subtle and sophisticated during the day to bold and sultry for a special evening out, a well-applied smoky eye enhances the unique contours and features of your face while adding a welcome dash of drama.

We’ve made it even easier for you to achieve this versatile look by combining all the shades that you need into the Glam Eye Kit.Glam Eye Kit Illustration

Step 1

Using the Mineral Fusion™ Glam Eye Kit, set the stage with a wash of the white pearl (BASE) color applied from lash line to brow bone.  The Eye Base brush is ideal with its flat, wide brush head.

Step 2

Next, choose a lid color a shade or two darker than the base you’ve just applied. If you’re using the Mineral Fusion™ Glam Eye Kit, press the smoky gray (LID) color onto entire eyelid, stopping beneath the brow bone.

Step 3

Starting at the outer edge of the eye, using a back & forth motion similar to a windshield wiper, blend a deeper color onto the natural crease of the eye with a soft brush. In the Mineral Fusion™ Glam Eye Kit, this is the deep lavender (CREASE) shade.  Layering the color results in a deeper, more dramatic smoky effect.

Step 4

Lastly, to finish off the look you need to define the eyes. You may do this by lining the top lash line with a deep eye shadow or an eye pencil. Applying the charcoal (DEFINE) shade Mineral Fusion™ Glam Eye Kit with the Eye Liner/Brow brush is perfect for a smoky eye look. For an ultra smoky effect, soften the line by smudging. Finish with a coat of Mineral Fusion™ Lengthening Mascara.

When you’re ready to transition from day to night, you can easily transform an office-appropriate smoky eye to one that’s ready for an evening out.

First, deepen the overall effect by gently blending a darker hue into the crease of the eye. Next, gently smudge liner around the outer corner of the eyes and above and below the lash line. In the inner corners of the eyes and just below the brow bone, apply a lighter, neutral hue with a touch of shimmer for an instant highlighting effect. Finish by brushing on second coat of mascara.

Extra tips:

  • For daytime, experiment with everything from earthy tones to soft violets. At night, try shimmering grays, rich plums and charcoal hues.

  • Frame your smoky eye and achieve a photo-ready finish by blending a small amount of eye color in a complementary hue into the middle of the brow line.

  • For instant eyelash curl, apply mascara while holding the wand in a vertical position, perpendicular to the lash line.

  • Don’t be afraid to experiment with color combinations. Try contrasting hues on the lid and in the crease to achieve a more dramatic, theatrical effect.
